Reunion Tower Over the Top NYE
The Hook/History
This is the Times Square of Texas. Reunion Tower has been the centerpiece of the Dallas skyline since 1978. The "Over the Top" fireworks show is a synchronized pyrotechnic display that launches from the ball itself.
The "Why"
It is the only 360-degree panoramic fireworks show in the Central Time Zone. You don't just watch it; you feel it. The entire downtown skyline lights up in coordination. It is televised across the region, but being there in person (at the lawn parties nearby) is electric.
The Experience
Thousands gather at the base. Food trucks, live bands, and a collective countdown that echoes off the skyscrapers. It is the definitive Texas NYE image.
2025 Status
For the countdown to 2026, they are adding a drone show component that will interact with the fireworks for the first time.
Austin's New Year
The Hook/History
Austin does NYE the only way it knows how: with live music. This alcohol-free, family-friendly event takes over Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake.
The "Why"
It captures the spirit of Austin. You have local bands playing on multiple stages, art installations, and a laid-back vibe that is very different from the glitz of Dallas. The fireworks reflect off the lake with the city skyline as a backdrop.
The Experience
Bring a blanket. Eat from a food truck. Listen to the next Gary Clark Jr. It's communal and chill until the finale at 10 PM (for families) and midnight.
2025 Status
The 2025 lineup features a reunion of a legendary Austin band (rumored to be Spoon).
Sundance Square NYE
The Hook/History
Sundance Square is one of the best urban plazas in America. On NYE, it becomes a massive block party.
The "Why"
It feels intimate yet huge. The red brick streets, the lights on the Westbrook building, and the cowboy hats create a unique aesthetic. It's safe, clean, and incredibly fun.
The Experience
Live country and rock music. Street performers. And at midnight, a fireworks show that feels like it's right on top of you.
2025 Status
They are expanding the footprint to include the new City Hall plaza for 2025.
Black & White Ball
The Hook/History
The Houstonian is an institution. Their Black & White Ball is the society event of the season.
The "Why"
If you want to dress up, this is the place. Tuxedos, gowns, and champagne towers. It harkens back to the oil boom days of excess and glamour.
The Experience
A seated multi-course dinner, a big band orchestra, and dancing until 1 AM. It is refined, expensive, and unforgettable.

Tickets for the 2025 ball sold out in record time (October).
Celebrate San Antonio
The Hook/History
San Antonio throws a party like no one else. The celebration spills from the River Walk up to Hemisfair Park.
The "Why"
It's a fiesta. Confetti, cascarones, and Tejano music. The energy is vibrant and multicultural. The fireworks over the Tower of the Americas are spectacular.
The Experience
You walk the River Walk with a drink in hand, then head up to the park for the countdown. It's crowded, loud, and joyous.
2025 Status
They are adding a "River Parade" component for 2025 with illuminated floats.
Gruene Hall NYE
The Hook/History
Gruene Hall is Texas' oldest dance hall. Spending NYE here is a bucket list item for country music fans.
The "Why"
The wood floors creak, the beer is cold, and the music is real. It feels like stepping back in time. There are no fireworks, just great tunes and two-stepping.
The Experience
It's intimate. You are sweating on the dance floor with 800 of your new best friends.
2025 Status
The headliner for 2025 is a surprise major country star (think George Strait level).
Hotel Emma
The Hook/History
Hotel Emma at the Pearl is arguably the best hotel in Texas. Their NYE party is for the design-conscious crowd.
The "Why"
The setting is the old Pearl Brewery. It's dark, moody, and incredibly stylish. The cocktails are craft, and the food is culinary-driven.
The Experience
It feels like a private club. You sip a "Three Emmas" cocktail in the library before dancing in the Elephant Cellar.
2025 Status
They are offering a "Recovery Brunch" package for New Year's Day 2026 that is already legendary.
Billy Bob's Texas
The Hook/History
It's Billy Bob's. It's massive. It has live bull riding.
The "Why"
If you want a rowdy, authentic Texas NYE, this is it. You can watch a bull ride, play pool, and see a major concert all under one roof.
The Experience
You wear your cowboy hat. You eat BBQ. You watch the balloon drop over the massive dance floor. It's unpretentious and wild.
2025 Status
They have upgraded their sound system for 2025. It remains the best place to wear boots on NYE.
Lights All Night
The Hook/History
Lights All Night (LAN) is the longest-running EDM festival in Texas. It takes over Dallas Market Hall for two nights (Dec 30-31). It attracts ravers from all over the country.
The "Why"
The production value is insane. Lasers, giant LED walls, confetti cannons. The lineup features the biggest DJs in the world (Skrillex, Marshmello, etc.). It is an immersive world of light and sound.
The Experience
It's high energy. You dance for 6 hours straight. The "LAN Fam" community is welcoming and colorful (lots of neon and kandi). It's a sensory journey.
2025 Status
Celebrating its 16th year in 2025, they are promising their biggest stage design yet.
Kemah Boardwalk NYE
The Hook/History
Kemah Boardwalk is a theme park on the water south of Houston. Their NYE celebration is designed for families.
The "Why"
They do two fireworks shows: one at 9 PM for the kids, and one at midnight. It allows parents to celebrate without keeping toddlers up too late. It's free to enter the boardwalk. You have rides, games, and seafood restaurants.
The Experience
It's breezy and fun. You can ride the wooden rollercoaster and then watch fireworks over Galveston Bay. It's a stress-free way to celebrate.
2025 Status
They have added live salsa music for 2025 to spice up the plaza.
